Stalking Awareness: A Hidden Issue for Older Adults

January is National Stalking Awareness Month, a time to shed light on an issue that often remains in the shadows, especially for older adults. At Aging Care Connections, we often hear stories that highlight challenges older adults face but aren’t widely recognized. Stalking is one of these issues. While many people associate stalking with younger individuals, older adults can and do experience stalking – and the impact can be devastating.

Stalking involves repeated and unwanted attention, harassment, or behavior that causes fear. For older adults, this might come from acquaintances, neighbors, family members, or even strangers. Common tactics include persistent phone calls, surveillance, or unwelcome visits. In some cases, perpetrators exploit an older adult’s vulnerabilities, such as living alone or relying on others for care. Unfortunately, stalking among older adults is often overlooked because it doesn’t fit the typical narrative. This can leave victims feeling isolated, fearful, or unsure about how to seek help.

At Aging Care Connections, we want to change that. Our Adult Protective Services (APS) program is here to provide support for older adults experiencing stalking or other forms of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. We can assess your situation, connect you with resources, and help you develop a safety plan tailored to your needs. Whether it’s ensuring secure living arrangements or connecting you with legal support, we’re committed to protecting your safety and dignity. Importantly, you don’t have to navigate this alone.

If you suspect stalking, don’t hesitate to reach out. You can call the Illinois statewide APS hotline at 1-866-800-1409 for anonymous assistance, contact Aging Care Connections directly at 708-354-1323, or visit our website at AgingCareConnections.org. Our compassionate team is ready to help ensure your safety and well-being.

Stalking awareness starts with recognizing that it’s an issue that can affect anyone – including older adults. By working together, we can raise awareness, offer support, and create a safer community for everyone.
