Meet Jim and Alice
Meet Jim, a 58-year-old man whose wife, Alice, is bravely facing the challenges of advanced Parkinson’s disease. This condition has rendered her bedbound, and she now relies on assistance for all her daily activities. Jim provides dedicated care and support, along with the help of a compassionate caregiver. Unfortunately, Jim’s support system is somewhat limited, adding to their difficulties. Additionally, it’s distressing to note that their son, who lives with them, had exhibited emotionally and physically abusive behavior towards both Jim and his wife, which only made their situation worse.
For over a year, an Adult Protective Services caseworker from Aging Care Connections has been working with Jim due to several reports of their situation. At first, Jim was hesitant to engage with the caseworker, making the assessment of the allegations quite challenging. However, after several meetings, he became more comfortable and agreed to meet monthly to talk about her situation. Although his wife was experiencing emotional abuse from her son, Jim wanted to focus on safety planning instead of other interventions. He denied that any abuse was happening, even though the caseworker had received calls from others saying that their son was in fact still emotionally abusing her.
One day, the caseworker received a distressing call from Jim, who bravely shared that his son had been physically abusive towards Alice. Understanding the urgency of the situation, the caseworker immediately stepped in to support Jim in obtaining an order of protection for his wife. Together, they contacted the legal aid hotline for protection, ensuring Jim felt supported. The caseworker remained by his side during the interview with Legal Aid and the subsequent online court hearing, providing comfort and reassurance. Thanks to their efforts, Jim’s son was served with the order of protection and is no longer living in their home. Jim has reclaimed peace and safety for his wife and for himself, feeling relieved and empowered in their own space again.
