Every May, communities across the country celebrate Older Americans Month, a time to honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of older adults. This year’s national theme, Champion Your Health, invites each of us to take an active role in our well-being—physically, mentally, and socially.
At Aging Care Connections, we see health as more than doctor’s visits and medications. Health is also about feeling connected, having purpose, and knowing you have someone to call when you need support.
What It Means to “Champion Your Health”
To champion your health means being your own advocate and taking small, meaningful steps that support your body, mind, and spirit. It doesn’t have to be complicated or perfect. It might look like:
- Saying “yes” to a walking group or exercise class – like our Senior Walking Club!
- Asking questions at a medical appointment
- Reaching out for help with food, housing, or caregiving
- Trying a new workshop, hobby, or social group
Every step is a win. And you don’t have to do it alone. Aging Care Connections is here to walk along with you.

How Our Programs Help You Champion Your Health
Our services are designed to make healthy aging more manageable, more connected, and more accessible:
- Information & Assistance
Our team helps older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers sort through options and understand benefits, programs, and services. Clear information leads to confident decisions and better health choices. - Basic Needs & Safety
Access to healthy food, safe housing, and reliable support is the foundation of good health. We connect older adults with resources that address these essentials so they can focus on living, not just getting by. - Caregiver Support
Caregivers’ health matters, too. We offer guidance, support groups, and connections to respite and services that ease the stress of caregiving and help caregivers protect their own well-being. - Aging Gracefully at Home
Many older adults want to stay in the homes and neighborhoods they know and love. We help coordinate services and supports that make aging in place safer and more comfortable. - Enrichment & Wellness
Workshops, fitness offerings, and educational programs keep people moving, learning, and socially engaged, key ingredients for healthy aging.
Across all 38 Chicagoland communities we serve, our goal is the same: help every older adult champion their health with dignity, independence, and support.
Fun Ways to Champion Your Health This May
Even before the full May calendar is published, you can start celebrating Older Americans Month with simple, enjoyable actions:
- Move a little more with a friend
Take a short walk with a neighbor, stretch during TV commercials, or pair up for a fitness activity. Moving together makes it easier, and more fun, to stay active. Check the ACC calendar for many fitness options – including chair yoga, tai chi, walking, and mindful movement. - Turn a check-in into a health boost
Call a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while or knock on a neighbor’s door for a quick hello. Social connection is good for your heart and your mood. - Ask one extra question at your next appointment
Bring a written list of questions or concerns to your doctor or pharmacist. Understanding your medications, diagnoses, and options is a powerful way to champion your health. - Try one new program or resource
When you see our May events posted, challenge yourself to attend one new workshop, support group, or enrichment offering. Invite a friend or caregiver to join you. - Reach out if something feels harder than it used to
If managing meals, transportation, bills, or caregiving feels overwhelming, that’s a sign to ask for help, not a sign of failure. One phone call can open doors to support.
