Guest Blog – Getting Around with Community Assisted Rides (CARS)
As individuals age, maintaining independence and staying connected to the community become increasingly important. For those aged 60 and better, access to reliable transportation is a key factor in preserving autonomy and ensuring engagement with essential services and social activities. Community Assisted Rides (CARS) addresses this need by offering accompanied ride services and supportive community outreach to older adults.
About Community Assisted Rides (CARS)
Established in 1999, CARS has been dedicated to providing safe, dignified transportation for older adults, fostering connections across generations. Their mission is to maximize the independence and well-being of older adults by enabling connections with others in their community. CARS ensures that their Very Important Passengers (VIPs) have company and companionship as they travel to various destinations, such as medical appointments, fitness classes, religious services, or the grocery store.
Services Offered
CARS offers a range of services tailored to meet the diverse needs of older adults:
- Ride Program: This foundational, free program provides accompanied transportation for older adults to and from errands and Compassionate volunteers stay with clients throughout their journey, ensuring safety and companionship.
- Library Homebound Delivery: In partnership with many libraries in the Western Suburbs, CARS delivers library materials directly to the doors of older adults with valid library cards, ensuring continued access to educational and recreational resources.
- Community Care: Beyond transportation, CARS offers various services throughout the year, including friendly phone calls, surprise flower bouquets, and special treats, all aimed at enhancing the well-being of their older neighbors.
Impact and Testimonials
CARS has made a significant impact on the lives of older adults in the community. For instance, Hilary, a donor and granddaughter of a CARS client, shared, “My late grandmother often relied on CARS volunteers when our family was not available to take her to the doctor and other appointments. This allowed her more independence and an ability to plan her days and appointments in a way that worked for her.” Barbara, an 89-year-old CARS client, expressed, “[Community Assisted Rides] has offered me freedom and stability, which helps me continue to live the life I love.”
