6 Tips for a Meaningful Holiday Season
As the holiday season approaches, the warmth of gatherings and traditions can sometimes highlight feelings of isolation for older adults separated from family or living alone. At Aging Care Connections, a non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults and caregivers across 38 communities in the Lyons, Proviso, Riverside, Leyden, and Norwood Park townships, we emphasize that aging well includes fostering meaningful connections. Our mission-driven programs, such as the Aging Well Neighborhood (AWN) initiative and caregiver support services, provide essential resources to combat loneliness and promote community. Below are practical tips for older adults, neighbors, and family caregivers alike.
For Older Adults: Cultivating Holiday Joy Independently
- Engage in Local Social Events: Join Aging Care Connections’ or congregate meal sites for companionship and festive activities. These welcoming gatherings are regularly announced on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
- Volunteer to Give Back: Volunteer with Aging Care Connections. Many older adults find renewed purpose by helping peers – we’re always looking for volunteers who want to make a difference in their communities!
- Access Home-Based Support: Let our home-delivered meals and friendly telephone reassurance programs handle daily needs so you can focus on what brings you joy, whether decorating, virtual visits with family, or quiet reflection.
For Neighbors and Community Members
- Offer Simple, Thoughtful Outreach: A quick knock on the door, a shared plate of cookies, or an invitation to a local holiday event can make a world of difference. Share our website (agingcareconnections.org) or call our Information & Assistance line (708-354-1323) together if additional support is needed.
For Family and Friend Caregivers
- Prioritize Your Own Well-Being: Caregiving intensity often rises during the holidays. Attend one of Aging Care Connections’ free monthly Caregiver Support Groups (virtual and in-person options available) or schedule a confidential consultation with our Caregiver Specialists. Respite opportunities, including short-term in-home relief, allow you to recharge while ensuring your loved one remains safe and engaged. For those managing the care of a loved one with dementia, our Memory Cafés offer an opportunity to spend meaningful time together.
- Accept the Help You Deserve: Use our evidence-based Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes or one-on-one coaching to learn strategies for setting boundaries, managing stress, and involving other family members, small steps that preserve both your energy and the joy of the season.
