5 Mistakes to Avoid When Moving to a Smaller Home

Bringing too much

You are probably downsizing for several reasons. The greatest of these is that you no longer need as much space and you most likely don’t need all the things that are in your current space. Many  people make the mistake of trying to fit 2000sf of furniture into a 1000sf home. It won’t fit, or it won’t fit nicely. Think about what you love and what brings you joy in your current home and make those items a priority.

Big furniture and small rooms

Even if you pare down the number of items you plan to move, the dimensions of your current furniture may not scale well in your new home. Make sure you compare the size of your current living room to the one you will be moving into. A 60” sofa may work better than a 90” sofa. Perhaps a love seat and your favorite recliner will be enough and will fit nicely in your new home. The kitchen or dining room table are perfect in your current home but do they make sense in your new space? Chances are you won’t be hosting large events and a small table with only a few chairs will work just fine.

Not planning for less closet space

Measure the linear feet of your new closet space and compare to your current home. Most people find they have 1/4 to 1/3 the space. There are several solutions to help with this. You can consider hanging double rods in the closet which will give you layered hanging space. Also, think about underbed storage containers so the “off season” items can be stored until needed.

Storage overload

Storage is often a concern when moving to a smaller unit. Try to choose pieces in your home that double as display and storage. Trunks that double as coffee tables are perfect for storing blankets or photos. Small dressers that display family photos can double as storage for linens or dish towels.

Changing everything

Whether you believe it or not, it is important to bring some of the old into the new. Even if your furniture is older and needs to be updated, make sure you consider bringing what’s on the walls with you to your new home. Family pictures and paintings that have hung in your home for years will bring you comfort as you settle into your new home. Consider bringing a few of the things you see every day as a reminder that home is where you are.
